Artist Interview: Will Bryant

Will Bryant is an Austin-based illustrator with a knack for drawing really enticing things. I am insanely in love with all of Will’s creations. He’s also part of a studio called Public School.

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

I’m happily married to my childhood sweetheart. I loved growing up in the 90s and still have an infatuation with Michael Jordan. I’m truly blessed to be able to make a living doing what I absolutely love.

What’s it like in Austin, Texas? Ever been to SXSW?

Austin is amazing. You have the aspects of a big city but the vibe of a small town. Loads of great food, music, and a great culture that’s continually growing. Solid vibes all around! And yes, several times. I started coming down for just showcases Gorilla vs Booze, Paw Tracks showcase, and then eventually for other free stuff.

Were you into drawing at a young age? If so, what types of things would you draw?

I was, but not just a whole lot. I mostly would draw sports figures, sneakers, profiles of dudes heads with varying facial hair.

I see that you graduated from Mississippi State University in late 2008. What was art school like for you?

Art school was amazing! There’s a great energy and vibe in Mississippi. Especially when I was alongside Kate Bingaman-Burt and her husband Clifton. Kate was my professor, and Clifton was my boss at the Public Design Center. The experience was absolutely crucial to where I am now. I would not be doing what I’m doing if it weren’t for finest folks in Mississippi. The professors at State were very positive and did a great job of walking the line between friends and teachers. I really cherish my days on campus and hope to have the same impact when I become a professor.

How do you think your style of work has evolved over time?

I hope its becoming more refined. My process of working with drawn elements has progressed. I feel more confident with my line work and letterforms.

What’s your process like? Do you sketch out the piece before you dive right into it, or do you carefully plan the whole thing out?

It depends on the project, but I’d say 90% of the time I just start with a drawing pen and a blank sheet of paper. I draw things piece by piece and compose them in photoshop or illustrator.

What time of day do you feel you work best?

It used to be late evening, but now I’ve transitioned into early morning to get things started. I still have some late night work sessions!

Do you listen any music while you work?

Absolutely. It’s become an essential part of my workflow, which is likely a bad thing. My favorite listens as of recent are Can, Toro y Moi, Ducktails, White Rainbow, Beach House, Bob Dylan, White Denim, and Smith Westerns.

How’s 2010 treating you so far? Got any big projects in the works?

2010 is blasting off to the moon! It’s remarkable. I’ve been fortunate to work with Nike once again, Poketo, Graniph, and several projects with Mark Menjivar.  I’m also working on projects with other members of Public School such as a GOOD Magazine cover and a book for Chronicle Books! In addition I’m super pumped to see loads of work unreleased work hit the streets later this year.

Who are some of your favourite artists?

Kate Bingaman Burt is the BEST. She’s my mentor and friend. Others include Steven Harrington, Geoff McFetridge, Meg Hunt, Frank Chimero, and the up and coming Nicole Lavelle. This list could go on for days! There are so many great people making awesome stuff.
