Blankets by Craig Thompson has been out for quite a while, but it is still one of my favourite comic books. Highly recommended.
And before Blankets, there was Goodbye Chunky Rice. Wonderfully written, amazing artwork.

i also recommend los bros hernandez’ Love & Rockets, julie doucet (she’s canadian!), Pia Guerra (Y the Last Man is GREAT), Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm), and Fables (the Vertigo ones where James Jean does the covers).
